1. ‘Religion’ is a set of beliefs (peculiar attitude of the mind), not the practices which accopmany them – according to my preferred definition.
2. if we do not define exactly what we mean by the term, different people will understand ‘religion’ to mean very narrow concepts (like the librarian in the example) while others use it to define much broader concepts – such as it would seem you are suggesting (if I am reading your comment correctly)
