A ‘Houle’ in the moral fabric of Ottawa University

Goodness knows, I am not a fan of Ann Coulter.  My dad thinks she’s cute – I’m unconvinced.  Rather, I find her offensive, ill informed, un-objective and, well, not very bright.

Still, a person’a a person, no matter how brash!

This week, Ann Coulter is going to be embarrassing conservatives in Canada by speaking at 3 Universities.  You’d think that after the ‘Bash-a-Jew’ week most Canadian Universities held in March, they’d let up a bit on the anti-Jewish rhetoric on campus…

But no, no such luck!

Ms. ‘Jews-are-unperfected-Christians’ Coulter has been invited to demonstrate her ‘selective intelligence’ at 3 Canadian Universities this week.

And why not?

Why should ALL the anti-Semitism at our Universities come exclusively from the left of the political spectrum?  A little right-wing anti-Semitism brings ‘diversity’ to those institutions we entrust with shaping our young, bright minds!

Still, I do think that it is great that she gets to give her speech, do her bit.  I may not like her views – and diss her mercilessly for her open contempt for anyone not Christian, but, she has just as much right to speak her mind (if you can stretch the meaning of the word ‘mind’) as you or I or anyone else.  Freedom of speech must be given the greatest possible precedence because, just like with an infected cut: when you hide odious ideas out of sight, they don’t just ‘go away’ – they fester.

Therefore, anything short of immediately and directly inciting violence (notice I did not add ‘hate’ there) must be permitted. If – and only if – the speaker had already said/written things which were ‘slanderous/defamatory’ or in breech of a law in another way (revealing state or trade secrets, etc.), legal action (criminal and/or civil) can and should be taken against him/her.  Not before!

What is interesting, though, is the reaction from the Universities themselves!

While all care was taken to ‘protect’ the left-wing ‘JewsZionists-are-baby-killers’ anti-semites who were left-wing and/or Muslim from any criticism of their rhetoric and from putting limits on their freedom of speech, making sure nobody was permitted to say anything which might hurt their feelings as they call for the murder of citizens of Israel, the right-wing Christian anti-Semite has been threatened with legal action – should she not self-censor her words sufficiently to some unspecified level – before she even got here!

A Houle in the moral fabric of Ottawa University – François Houle, Vice-recteur aux études / Vice-President Academic and Provost, Université d’Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 550, rue Cumberland Street, Ottawa (ON) K1N 6N5, téléphone / telephone : 613 562-5737, télécopieur / fax : 613 562-5103, e-mail: francois.houle@uottawa.ca – that Houle, to be specific, has sent Ms. ‘Jews-have-to-obey-religious-laws-but-Christians-don’t-because-Jesus-will-Fed-Ex-their-souls-right-to-heaven’ Coulter, bullying her with the threat of lawfare if he does not approve of her message.

I’m not sure if you have picked up on my subtle hints:  I think that Ms. Coulter is a personification of  much of what is wrong with the ‘right wing’.  Voices like hers drown out sane voices, like, say Thomas Sowell, and cause many, many people to reject any and all messages coming from the right’.  But…

Freedom of speech is freedom of speech!

More accurate than you realize, perhaps . . …
Reading ‘Guilty’ by Ann Coulter and ‘Intellectuals and Society’ by Thomas Sowell side by side reveals many commonalities.

Sowell gently speaks of the intellectuals confidence that all things economic, social and moral can be centrally controlled, discounting the vast amount of mundane day-to-day knowledge possessed by the other 99% of the population that keeps the fabric of a true democracy together.

Ann hammers the same points home, with literally hundreds of specific examples including the blindness of the mainstream media to the efforts of the same self anointed elitists.

If they were both to sit down to dinner together, and we filmed it as a documentary, I’m certain it would be both riveting and revealing.

If you didn’t see her on the Michael Coren show, you can catch it here: http://www.ctstv.com/ontario/player.php?ctsvidID=17499&show=Michael%20Coren%20Show

She addresses many of the accusations against her, which have been largely based on soundbites from sources other than here, including the “Ms. ‘Jews-are-unperfected-Christians’ one.

    Xanthippa says:

Louise: the ‘Jews are unperfected Christians’ quote is in the video I linked to in my post (complete with body-language analysis): she repeats it – re-phrasing herself so there is no misunderstanding – several times during the interview. And – the context is clear, unequivocal and deeply anti-Semitic!!!! Frankly, her automatic, unquestioned presumption that ‘everyone’ would WANT to end up in the ‘Christian heaven’ is deeply insulting to – well, everyone except Christians!

Face it: Ann Coulter is a bigoted git!

Which, of course, does not mean she ought not be entitled to freedom of speech!

    Let her speak!!!

That is not a favour to her – it is simply part of the whole baggage that comes with ‘freedom of speech’: EVERYONE, no matter just how much of a git they are, MUST be granted full freedom to speak their mind!

What I find deeply distressing is that so many conservatives appear ready to condone her bigotry, simply because she is presented as being right-wing!

Personally – I will defend, to the death, the right of everyone – including Ann Coulter – to speak freely. But, when they say something idiotic – I WILL criticize them for it! Regardless of who they are!

No. We’re not condoning bigotry. We’re condoning political correctness, which is the very essence of Ann Coulter’s shtick. I’m surprised you don’t see through it, Xanth, but I guess that’s a big part of the problem. Political correctness imposes a state a zombie-like humourlessness as it seeks to condemn any and every expression of contrary views by calling them racist.

    Xanthippa says:

Louise – I DO see through this!

That is why I am defending Coulter’s right to free speech!

At the same time – I call it as I see it!

If somebody convinces me – through her words/actions – that she is a bigot, I will call her a bigot! If someone says bad things – I will ‘tell them off’! That is a integral part of the whole ‘free speech’ thingy: calling someone a ‘bigot’ or a ‘racist’ is not a ground for shutting them up….which is why it is the right thing to do if the facts support the ‘label’!

When the whole ‘Galloway’ thing was happening, I was equally disgusted to hear so many people who consider themselves ‘pro-free-speech’ – yet who wished to censor Galloway…. So much for defending ALL ‘free speech’!

Coulter – if you take the time to read and listen to her words – is a git and a bigot. And, she is an anti-Semite. That much she has convinced me of.

I also think Geert Wilders is a jerk! And I openly say so.

Which does not mean that Wilders, Galloway, Coulter ought to be shut up! To the contrary: they must all say their bit, so that we MAY form our OWN opinions of them – and we MUST then honestly evaluate their words.

That is the SECOND part of the whole ‘freedom of speech’ equation: the part which justifies the first.

Therefore, when people do not fulfill the second part of this equation, they are undermining the first.

THAT is why I am so upset: the ‘conservative’ sites are all focused on the 1st part, but, in the case of Coulter, have failed to fulfill the second part.

    Xanthippa:

It is surprising, but heartening, to read here that the Canadian Association of University Teachers has called Mr. A. Hole (er, I mean, Houle) to task for his disgusting attempt to intimidate Ann Coulter with not-so-subtle threats of lawfare. One can only hope the Association’s demand for an apology means that the faculty and staff of Canadian universities are waking up to the erosion of their intellectual freedom and its dire implications for the whole country.

It is not surprising , on the other hand, that treacherous cowards like Mr. A. Hole (er, I mean, Houle) thrive at the University of Ottawa, whose president is none other than the blatant totalitarian, Allan Rock. As Justice Minister and Attorney General he said that his dream is “a Canada in which only the police and the military have firearms.”

Indeed. Hitler, Stalin, and Mao had the same dream.

The scurrilous letter of Mr. A. Hole (er, I mean, Houle) is just a mealy-mouthed, underhanded version of the same poison.

What a contemptible crew they are.
