Pat Condell: ‘Drunk on Religion’

Not that long ago, I wrote a post because I was frustrated about the inaccurate use of the terms ‘agnostic’ and ‘atheist’.

In the comments following the post, JR and I got into a bit of a discussion on this topic:  JR insisted (at least, that is my understanding) that even though he considers himself an agnostic, he’d rather toss his lot in with theists than atheists.

In my never-humble-opinion, Pat Condell’s video (though it stands perfectly well on its own) makes an excellent addition to this discussion.

One Response to “Pat Condell: ‘Drunk on Religion’”

  1. JR Says:

Heh. I like most of Condell’s stuff. That’s a funny rant but I think he protests a bit too loudly (not to mention rudely) – like a typical militant atheist.

I’ve had my share of encounters with evangelists at my door over the years too. And, like Condell I used to try to engage them in discussion which can be fun but often ended unsatisfactorily for all parties. I still have a Mormon Bible on my bookshelf as a result of exchanges with that group. But for years since I’ve not been bothered in the least by them. They still come to the door but now, should I choose to open the door, I politely say I’m not interested and they invariably smile and go on their way.

Just for the record I’ll repeat what I said in qualifying my preference for theists over atheists:
“All of the horrendously bad actors and most of the misguided thinkers in recent history have been atheistic: the likes of Marx, Stalin, Hitler, Mao, Pol Pot, Fidel Castro and assorted proponents everywhere of totalitarianism, communism, socialism, and statism, including, for example, the sponsors of the recent 10/2 One Nation rally. I’ll throw my lot in with a theistic Glenn Beck any day. My affinity for theists, however, is limited to those who also strongly support individual and economic liberty which excludes many if not most mainstream Christian Churches and most certainly, Islam.” [Which led us into a discussion about whether or not Hitler was really an atheist.]

Sounds like we’ve gone a full circle!
