Pat Condell: ‘Children of a Stupid God’

Here is Pat Condell’s latest video, ‘Children of a Stupid God’.  Whatever your belief-system (or lack thereof), he does bring up an intersting perspective…and a few good points for thought:

The problem I have with Pat Condell and others, like Christopher Hitchens, is that they take their concept of God from the Judeo-Christian literature and tradition, where God comes off as a big bogey man in the sky that goes around with a magic wand and/or a bolt lightening creating and destroying things, or performing impossible feats. Well, of course, anyone with a modern education and mindset would not accept that such a being exists and such a being created the world. But that doesn’t in any way shape or form prove that God doesn’t exist. In other words, they have a way to go with respect to understanding anything bigger or more abstract or more awe inspiring. They over confidently declare to know what no human can ever know.

Of course, Louise, you are correct! However…

There are very, very many people who DO subscribe to this specific vision of what constitutes ‘God’. And, Pat Condell’s little rant is a good reminder of what such a vision of God would mean in reality….

It does NOT – in any way, shape or form – speak about any other form of ‘God’. Nor does Pat Condell say such a God does not exist: he merely asserts that he does not BELIEVE in this form of a God.

Still, there are very many people – and I have personally met too many of them – who DO believe that the Old Testament/Koran description of God is the RIGHT one. And, these people are not shy about their beliefs…and DEMAND that society accept their beliefs as FACTS!

To me – that is wrong.

Perhaps that is why I consider myself an ‘ignostic’ – rather than anything else. An ‘ignostic’ does not believe in ANY SPECIFIC form of ‘God’…as a matter of fact, ignostics do not believe that we could ever comprehend what form/nature/shape/characteristics any ‘God’ could take on…. And, if we cannot define what we mean by ‘God’, it seems rather silly to debate His/Her/Their existence…. or demand that women be covered in a burka in order not to anger Him/Her/Them…

Either way, I think that it is important for people who DO believe that ‘God’ is an absolute rule-giver, and that it is an obligation for every ‘believer’ to force everyone (inside or outside their faith) to obey what ‘THEY’ think God’s will is and God’s rules are – I think that it is very important for those who would impose THEIR religious rules onto others to listen to Pat Condell’s message…. because it raises some important questions.

For people who value spirituality over dogma, this ‘rant’ is not a threat because this is a criticism of a specific, dogmatic view of ‘God’. And, if it leads even one person to question dogma – and understand the difference between dogmatic depiction of ‘God’ and true spirituality – then I think this is a good thing!
