Is Dr. Michael Mann Canuckophobic?

Do you remember Dr. Michael Mann?

He is a singularly interesting figure in the world of Anthropogenic Climate Change hypothesis.  (In this comment thread on Bishop Hill blog, the field is referred to as ‘Mann-made Global Warming – lol.)

He was one of the central figures in the leaked CRU emails – and of the ‘hide the decline’ fame. (Here is the song..)

Dr. Mann is also the author of the thoroughly debunked ‘hockey stick’ graph – as demonstrated by Steve McIntyre and Ross McKitrick.  Dr. Mann has said some very ‘not nice’ things about this statistician and economist…

And, he is in the process of suing Dr. Tim Ball – another Canadian!

Aside – this lawsuit is not going well for Dr. Mann:  as part of the discovery process, he has to hand over for courtroom scrutiny the very data he has spent a decade hiding, or face contempt of court charges and a ruling in Dr. Ball’s favour.  Somebody did not think his tactics through…

But, that is not all!

Now, Dr. Mann has decided to sue National Review for the words Mark Steyn wrote there…

ANOTHER CANADIAN!!!

With all the critics of Dr. Mann ‘out there’ – why is he picking on the Canadians?

Could it be – CANUCKOPHOBIA?

I don’t know – perhaps we should have someone in the sensitivity training field pay Dr. Mann a little visit, just to be on the safe side…

What about those who think everyone is unfairly picking on poor Dr. Mann?

If you don’t think the vast bulk of the criticism heaped upon him is undeserved, please, consider the following:  his Penn State course information contains the following: (H/T betapug)

GAIA – THE EARTH SYSTEM (EARTH 002, Section 2; 3 credits) with the course schedule for days 37 & 38 is : MOVIE: An Inconvenient Truth (Part 1 and Part 2)

 

Yes – according to this ‘scientist’, ‘An Inconvenient Truth’ is Universtiy-level science material!  LOL!!!  When, years ago, I showed it to my kids, my young son actually thought that this movie was made with intentional errors in the science so as to train kids how to spot bad science…and greatly relished pointing the mistakes out!

Come on!

If you want to be taken seriously as a scientist, you really ought to know better than to use such seriously flawed material as a teaching tool…

In other words, perhaps more than any other scientist of our era, Dr. Mann is rather to be ridiculed…perhaps his compulsion for making himself the laughing stock of the scientific community is rooted in the same pathology from which his (potential) Canuckophobia stems.

P.S.  It looks like Dr. Mann’s legal fund is backed by George Soros, via  Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility (PEER) and GAP’s Environmental program…this could add a whole new dimension to the conflict.

BBC: Female Genital Mutilation In The UK – a hidden world July 2012

Of course, all genital mutilations of a minor ought to be prosecuted.

We need to speak up and make this known to our authorities everywhere:  the right of a person to hold views (religious, cultural or whatever) stops short of the body of another human being!

Passing laws to protect children is important:  upholding these laws is no less so.

I don’t quite know what – yet, but I plan to donate something…  As I have already promised to donate my painting of Aisha to the Free Thinking Film Society fundraiser, I’ll have to think of something else:  suggestions for the subject of a painting are welcome!

Free Dominion makes the pages of WorldNetDaily

Free Dominion, the oldest conservative internet discussion forum in Canada, has made the pages of WorldNetDaily!

From the article:

‘Mark Fournier, in a statement on the website, explained that the appeals court has instructed parties to return to Superior Court with expert witnesses who can better inform the court of the many new issues related to the situation.

“Traditional defamation law is badly in need of an update in its application to the Internet,” Mark Fournier wrote.

“Unfortunately, and for reasons we do not understand, the high court ordered us to pay John Baglow $14,000 in costs. It is difficult because the appeals court wants us to help them examine these important issues, yet they placed a financial burden onus that could potentially knock us out of the game. If this happens it will be bad for Canadian Internet users.

“We will remain in an era where Internet arguments will be settled by SLAPP suits and lawfare, and, to us, that is completely unacceptable.”’

 

The article also lists the link where one can donate to help the Fourniers fund the legal battle to keep our internet speech free and a link to the long list of legal battles the Fourners have already withstood!

Exactly when did Jerusalem stop being Israel’s capital?

So, what is the capital of Israel?

According to the UK‘s Guardian, it is Tel Aviv.

According to the BBC, while East Jerusalem is the capital of Palestine, Israel does not have a capital at all! (H/T: BCF)

And the US State Department sort of splits the difference between the two:

So, exactly when did Jerusalem stop being Israel’s capital?  (Or, at least, West Jerusalem – if you want to avoid internal inconsistency within the BBC narrative…)

Omar Khadr protests – 18th of July, 2012

And here is a comment received at my site about this from someone who, like I, is an immigrant into Canada and wants to preserve the Canada we came to:

‘I was an immigrant to Canada and I proudly stood up at my citizenship ceremony and swore allegiance to Canada, I chose Canada for the freedoms and opportunities. I find it irrehensible for a person born in Canada who goes overseas to fight against Canada and Canadian values; this is tatamount to treason and Mr Khadr should face the full extent of the law; The entire khadr family gave up their right to be called Canadian.If Minister Toews is forced to accept Khadr, then He (Khadr) should be imprisoned for life on the crime of treason.

Keep up the good work and fight to keep Khadr out, even expand the campaign to the rest of his family.’

100% ‘fair use’ political ad censored by DMCA

This is a perfect illustration of how the unbalanced copyright laws are abusive.

The political ad of Obama singing the song ‘Let’s Stay Together’ while showing images of him with rich lobbyists is as textbook  ‘fair use’ as there is.  Yet, the song rightsholder, BMG, had it yanked off the interwebitudes:

‘A YouTube video produced by the Romney for President campaign got hit by a takedown request on Monday, highlighting the challenges that the Digital Millenium Copyright Act can pose for free speech.

…

Yet the “notice and takedown” process established by the DMCA and apparently utilized by BMG in this case doesn’t give the Romney campaign much recourse. It can file a counter notice stating that it believes its clip to be fair use, but YouTube is required to wait a minimum of 10 days before putting the video back up. In a campaign where the news cycle is measured in hours, 10 days is an eternity.’

Because sometimes, delaying a message is just as good as stopping it…

Another dimension of the problem is that individuals unfairly censored under the current policies are penalized for the other side’s failure – without any accessible or effective recourse or remedy readily available.  They are, in a very real sense, guilty until proven innocent – at their own cost and by their own effort.

This is so contrary to our common law tradition I don’t know where to begin!

And it’s only going to get worse – unless we shift our enforcement focus from ‘fair dealing’ to ‘fair ‘use’ (as, hopefully, seems to be happening up here, in Canada).

Recent polls suggest a majority* of Canadians are opposed to the return of Omar Khadr because we think he continues to represent a serious threat to the security of our country.

Khadr remains a dangerous threat because of his radical family and Al-Qaeda roots, plus he has not been de-radicalized at Gitmo. If he returns and is going to be released we believe a case can be made to have him charged with Treason for “assist[ing] an enemy at war with Canada, or any armed forces against whom Canadian
Forces are engaged in hostilities”2. To support that we plan on a public petition asking the Government of Canada to bring this charge against Khadr.
