It is difficult to understand the impact of much of the news we hear if we lack the context in which to evaluate it. While I have educated myself on Islam and even early Middle Eastern history in order to better understand the cultural context which gave rise to this major world religion.
Still, this does not mean that I understand all the intricacies of the modern network of Muslim organizations. Without understanding this, how can I recognize the difference between truly moderate Muslim voices (whom we need to help be heard) and shameless fronts for Islamists?
The ‘litmus test’ I usually use is ‘Sharia’: Muslims who have attempted to escape Sharia tend to be moderate voices of reason while Muslims who support Sharia, by definition, wish to impose their religious views onto their neighbors…. This may be a good ‘rule of thumb’, but it does not help me understand the complexities of the various Muslim organizations in North America.
Here is something that might help get one started: a 10-part course about the history and activities of Muslim Brotherhood in America.

This is an important article in Huffington Post by David B. Harris which documents how children in Canada’s Capital – under the auspices of the Ottawa Carleton District School Board – are being taught propaganda straignt from Iran-sponsored textbooks:
‘Several of the course’s Farsi language textbooks — authorized by Iran’s Ministry of Education, bearing the Islamic Republic’s crest, and the motto “Teaching and learning is worship” — were obtained by parents and given to this blogger: They feature prominent photographs of Ayatollah Khomeini, one showing Khomeini giving a grandfatherly cuddle to a young boy. Khomeini — who killed hundreds of thousands of citizens, installed torture chambers, hunted Bahais, and sent children into the Iran-Iraq War meat grinder, adorned in burial shrouds and carrying plastic keys to paradise — is referred to as “The Kind Imam,” according to the latter book’s caption’
The books come complete, with virulent anti-semitic propaganda, labeling non-believers and dogs as ‘unclean’ and praise for Islamic martyrdoom. It even has an illustrated story of a young hero who strapped explosives to himself and jumped under a tank to blow it up…
Lovely things to be teaching our kids…
More from the article:
‘Into the disgraceful public school situation, however, came a voice of conscience: Shabnam Assadollahi, award-winning journalist and human rights worker. An Ottawa immigrant settlement counsellor who had survived as a 16-year-old political prisoner in Tehran’s notorious Evin prison, Assadollahi managed to escape to Canada. She recognized the text books as extensions of Tehran’s efforts to groom a Fifth Column in our midst, and did her duty by her adoptive country, repeatedly remonstrating with Board and school officials about the books — without noticeable result.
Assadollahi even reported the issue to the RCMP, which seemed not to have accelerated things. For two years — as Ottawa children were exposed to Iran’s textbook poison — officials avoided meaningful action, perhaps preoccupied by the risk of political and career embarrassment, and the possibility of alienating Iran’s embassy and the increasingly influential, immigration-driven demographic of radical parents. Finally, the use of the offensive books quietly ended in 2011.’
Lovely.
Just lovely…

From an email from Miriam Namazie:
Update on Baroness Cox’s Equality BillOne Law for All has been spending a lot of time recently working with Caroline Cox and her team in promoting the Arbitration and Mediation Services (Equalities) Bill. The aim of the Bill, which was introduced to the House of Lords last year, is to make arbitration services in the UK subject to equality laws and to bar any arbitration where parties are of unequal standing; for example, it would disallow arbitration providers placing greater weight on the testimony of one party over another, as is the case with sharia law where a wife’s word is worth only half of her husband’s. The Bill will also create a criminal offence and make it illegal for arbitration bodies to pretend they have greater jurisdiction than they do – in other words, preventing them from misinforming people that they must obey their rulings. It will also place a duty on public bodies in the UK to inform women of their rights under British la w.The Bill is due for a second reading in the House of Lords this October. Many Peers have already pledged support but we need your help in persuading them further. If you have time, please write to any members of the House of Lords and ask them to consider the seriousness of this Bill and its need in maintaining a society where all people are equal before a single secular and democratic law. In your letter, you could point out to Peers that the Islamic Sharia Council and the Muslim Arbitration Tribunal both openly acknowledge that the testimony of women is given less value than that of men, that custody of children is awarded to fathers regardless of the circumstances, and that sharia family law permits, and therefore encourages, domestic violence and the abuse of women and children. You can find out how to write to Peers here: http://www.parliament.uk/get-involved/contact-a-lord/lord/. You can read the bill here: http://services.parliament.uk/bills/2012-13/arbitrationandmediationservicesequality.html.‘Equal and Free?’, a book of evidence compiled in support of the Bill, can be found here: http://equalandfree.org/download-file/downloads/EqualandFree.pdf. It includes testimony from women who have been through the sharia family law system here in Britain, as well as charities and groups which work closely with these women. It also looks at other religious tribunals, such as the Beth Din, and the effect the Bill may have on arbitration more broadly.Debates and ConferencesOne of the issues of concern to those deciding whether to support the Bill is that it may represent an infringement on religious liberty. One Law for All maintains that the right to freedom of religion ends at the point where other people’s rights begin. Sharia family and criminal law represent a serious infringement upon the rights of women to receive a fair hearing and to live without violence or the threat of violence. We will be holding a debate on this issue in the coming months and will invite members of both Houses of Parliament to attend – further details will follow. For more information on other speaking engagements and events, visit: http://www.onelawforall.org.uk/category/events/.Child ProtectionAs has been mentioned, sharia family law awards custody of children to fathers from a pre-set age regardless of the circumstances, and regardless of whether the father is abusive or violent. Again, the Muslim Arbitration Tribunal and the Islamic Sharia Council do not deny this fact. It is also known that matters of child custody and contact are being increasingly heard by sharia bodies, increasing the isolation of Muslims in Britain and endangering the children of Muslim parents who may be excluded from the protections provided by British law – which places the wellbeing of the child as the paramount consideration in all questions of this kind. We have been pushing this message very strongly at the House of Lords; all Peers have now received a copy of ‘Equal and Free?’ which contains details of how sharia family law is flouting legal norms in matters of child protection, and the danger this represents &ndas h; it is creating a parallel legal system, based on religion, in the UK.Support us!December will mark four years since the establishment of the One Law for All campaign. A lot has changed in the public debate on Sharia law and equality as a result of our campaign. If you want to and can, please help us to continue our essential work. I hope Thunderf00t is right: that people will look back at this point – the invention of the internet – as the turning point when the power of the individual came to its own…but I am nowhere near as optimistic.
I fear that this point in time will be seen as a tiny spark of light that, for a tiny moment, brought us light until it was smothered by heavy-handed regulation and became yet another tool of surveillance and oppression.
Yes, the desensitization method of approaching the Islamist sensitivities is working – for now. And that is a great thing!
But soon, even this type of action may be impossible – not because of any Islamist response but because of the fear of expressing oneself honestly on the internet.
From OpenMedia:
In the last few (OK, many) years, the only journalists who seem to be doing their jobs are bloggers.
Not all all bloggers, of course, but there are a few shining stars.
BlazingCatFur (BCF) is one of these.
Here are two connected stories he has been uncovering:
One Islamic school (Madrassa) has been preaching hate-speech directed both at Jews and and Muslims of differing denominations. And not the usual ‘hate speech’ which the Human Rights Commissions are persecuting, which is a thinly weiled code for ‘not politically correct speech’. We are talking REAL hate speech…
And, there is always the money trail: when charities get their tax exempt charitable status, they have to open their books to scrutiny, so that everyone can follow their financial trail. When this trail gets a little muddy, BCF just might be there to clear things up!
Bloggers can make a difference!
Perhaps not all bloggers get results like this, but then again, not all bloggers are like BCF!!!
He’s been on the trail of Toronto Madrassas and school cafeteria Mosques: documenting and tracing connections. Perhaps it is not surprising that his tenacious labours are bearing fruit:
‘FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
May 7, 2012The Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs Denounces Antisemitic Elements in Toronto Madrassah’s Curriculum
Toronto, ON – It was recently brought to the attention of The Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs that curriculum issued by the Toronto-based East End Madrassah contains antisemitic themes. In particular, the Level 8 curriculum document, which is publicly available on the Madrassah’s website, equates the beliefs of Judaism with Nazism and claims that “treacherous Jews” had “conspired to kill Prophet Muhammad”.
“Using religion to promote hatred among youth is not just offensive and abhorrent – it shows a stunning disregard for Canada’s basic values of decency and tolerance. Canadians of all backgrounds would be outraged to learn that horrific conspiracy theories are included in this curriculum, including the blood libel that Jews plotted to kill Muhammad,” said David Spiro, Greater Toronto Co-Chair of The Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs, the advocacy arm of Canadian Jewish Federations.
“Such slurs against the Jewish community violate the values that Canadians hold dear – such as goodwill and mutual respect. Instead of promoting such values, this curriculum only serves to promote animosity, racism, and hatred. Given that the Madrassah conducts classes at David & Mary Thompson Collegiate, we will be bringing this to the attention of the Toronto District School Board to ensure that public property is not used to advance racist agendas,” said Sheldon Goodman, Greater Toronto Co-Chair of the Centre.‘

Lately, my browser keeps crashing – because I have just way too many windows open.
But, I cannot possibly close them: each one is about something important that had happened that I really need to blog about… Except that – I am an exceptionally slow thinker and, as an Aspie, an even slower writer. Sometimes, it takes me hours just to squeeze out 2-3 hundred words about what is going on in the world….
But, if I close the windows with the stories in them, I know so much other blogging-worthy stuff will happen, I will never get back to them. So, until I deal with them, I need to keep the windows open!
Something has to give: even though I’d love to write a full post on each and every one of these stories, I simply cannot.
So, I have closed most of the windows (ack!!!) and will take this opportunity to bring just a few (hopefully somewhat) representative ones with just a brief comment on each:
OK – this one is not Islamic – it is tribal African, but it is an abuse of girls in an effort to make them ‘chaste’ by disfiguring them….breat ironing? Really? How can anyone do this to their child…..it makes my blood boil! It’s right up there with FGM…which is why I am including the video here.
It seems that Egypt has gone to the Muslim Brotherhood, which is acting as the political wing of the military.
For some Egyptians, even the Saudis are too ‘Westernized’ and much too pro-Israel.
To clarify: Islam teaches that religious leaders always outrank any monarch: that is why the crowd mocks the Saudi royal house.
End well, this will not…
